I have just finished configuring a new HP Compaq nc8430 and was ready to hand it over to the MD. It was fully patched, IE 7 the lot. Last thing on the list was to install his HP Photosmart 7960.
So downloaded the latest driver from the HP site which was one of those all-in-one exe, with step throughs. Didn't think must of it, but when it got to the installing stage it failed with a ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE. I tried it a number of times, re-booting and installing again with no success.
In the event viewer I had a MSIInstaller error ID 10005, "Product: HP Software Update - Internal Error. hpwuSchd2.exe"
Tried updated the MDAC, WIndows Installer and uninstalling IE7 and still no joy.
On the laptop in C:Program FilesHP I noticed a directory called "HP Software Update" which contained hpwuSchd2.exe. When I ran the HPWUCLi.exe file also in there I noticed it wanted to go to the web to update something on the laptop. I removed the "HP Software Update" folder under HP and tried to run the printer software. It only worked.
I replaced the folder back once I finished.....
